Silk embroiding is technically similar to any kind of thread embroiding.
Nevertheless, you should take care of two essential points :
- You should have smooth hands
The slightest bit of skin catches the thread and make it untwist. A non-greasy cream can be used before work in order to avoid this.
We recommend the Magnarelle cream (check our Links Page).
- You should better use short piece of thread.
Silk is more flowing than cotton and may untwist during work. A length of thread of 35/40 cm can prevent silk thread from untwisting. Pull the thread tight at each length of thread and sometimes, when necessary, make a needle row to twist the thread back. You can, as well, block the thread by a small knot behind the needle's eye. It prevents the yarn from unthreading while working.
All canvas can be silk embroided. Very good results can be obtained on linen sheets, calico, etc. The ideal thing remains silk on silk embroidery. If you use dyed canvas, pay attention that eco dyed silk threads don't harmonize well with a industrial dyed cloth. You can find eco dyed canvas.
You can also make your own eco dyed canvas thanks to our Eco Dyeing kits.
