« Les Soies de Marie », handcrafted with centuries-old technics, is a collection of items which colours recall ancient silks from XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries.
Our colour chart (except the Marco Polo Collection) is obtained by 100% eco friendly dyeing.
The dye is eco friendly and make the fibres, peculiarly silk fibres, have matchless shades. Colours never are too bright and all naturally harmonize together.
The plants we use are « colorfast dye » and have proven faithful since time immemorial. Among them, the most known are madder wort or indigo.
We also use tannin plants (such as acacia, gall nut, black alder or pomegranate), exotic plants.
Finally, we use cochineal lac which is from animal origin.
Contrary to common belief, vegetal dyeing is as resistant as chemical.
The process to fix the colour, the mordanting, is very important. Strict following of the dyeing process makes reliable results, but you shouldn't ask more from eco dyeing than from industrial dyeing !
If you leave an embroided cloth under the moonlight (much more destructive than sun), you'll obtain the same poor result with eco or chemical dye !
For those who would like to try dyeing :
For your first tries, you can have a look at my blog, in the « Teinture » category.
We can provide tinctures and mordants (products to fix colour). Lastly, if you're willing to learn more about dyeing technics, you can enrol yourself in our « Colour meetings ».
